Following the launch of GE’s new healthymagination business strategy — which commits billions of dollars to develop new healthcare products that improve access and quality while lowering costs — a great deal of the media focus was on new portable technologies, such as GE’s small, lightweight ultrasound that can benefit rural and developing markets. But the new strategy is also about leveraging technological advances at GE, financing the adoption of existing technologies, and expanding consumer access to better health and wellness information.
For example, GE’s Vivid E9 cardiac ultrasound was on display at the launch event in Washington, D.C. to illustrate the types of leaps in quality that can potentially infuse healthymagination products going forward. It’s built for 4-D, which allows a doctor to see movement in addition to 3-D views.
Similarly, GE currently has more than 30,000 of its Centricity electronic medical records systems in use. But a key pillar of healthymagination is the $2 billion in preferred financing to qualified healthcare providers to enable the adoption of technology such as this. GE projects it can help remove $28 billion in cost from the U.S. healthcare system while improving access to better and more affordable care through information technology.
Healthymagination is also about delivering more information on healthy living. For example, the Cleveland Clinic is joining with GE and NBC to conduct research that seeks to better understand important factors that move consumers from being aware of a health condition via the media to actually changing their behaviors for better health.
