Building a smarter grid, one customer at a time

In Oklahoma City, 6,600 people are plugged into a “smarter grid” made possible by Oklahoma Gas & Electric and GE. The technology project involves a whole new way of distributing and managing electricity that puts consumers in the driver’s seat. In addition to the two-way GE digital SmartMeters connected to participants’ homes, OG&E customers also have wireless consoles that display the cost of electricity per kilowatt hour at peak and off-peak times. The SmartMeters communicate with the electric company, and the display terminals communicate with the project participants. “Yesterday, we sent the customer a bill,” says Chris Greenwell, Manager of Commercial Services for OG&E. “Now, we give the customer tools to make intelligent choices.”

The Oklahoma smart grid project is, in my opinion, an example of an energy efficiency transit project of "fair investment" as envisioned by GE’s CEO Jeff Immelt and Jonathan Lash in the America takes steps towards clean energy, Financial Times article.

  4. Gheorghe Curelet-Balan says:

My above "fair investment" quote refers to the article‘s second fundamental criteria ("invest fairly") that Jeff Immelt and Jonathan Lash think should be included with the legislation of a stimulus package so that all Americans benefit from it.

Can I replace my meter with this GE smart meter and get that LCD box? Or does this thing have to talk to a mainframe first.

Can I request from my power company that I would like a smart meter installed at cost?

I already have a high tech infinity AC system and would love to have this extra technology in my home.

SMART METER This looks to be a good idea one can explain to the family about cutting the electricity costs by turning off the lights but they cannot relate. So by giving them a meter that they cane SEE and touch allows them to be involved then they try to change the consumption, which adds up to savings.

    GREAT IDEA!

  17. Cuong says:

Having a demand response in distribution system side is a new but not too new step toward a smart distribution grid, it would be more interesting to see when the customer can sell electric power back to the grid if some sort of renewable energy is available on the site.
