Carbon Trust and GE Partner to Pump Up Europe’s Clean Tech Sector

February 24, 2012

In a step to reverse Europe’s falling share of clean energy investment, GE has partnered with British non-profit Carbon Trust to infuse the European clean tech sector with fresh capital. The initial phase of the alliance includes a business incubation fund of $5 million to support new low carbon technologies in infrastructure applications. The initiative with is an extension of GE’s ecomagination Challenge – a $200 million global program to find and fund the best ideas in clean technology.

Some of the impetus to forge the new relationship came from trends revealed in a Bloomberg New Energy Finance report that shows a discouraging 40% drop in Europe’s share of clean energy investment over the past five years, a period during which Asia Oceania almost doubled its share.

GE’s green plant installation of Van Gogh’s A Wheatfield with Cypresses outside London’s National Gallery in Trafalgar Square this summer. GE is teaming up with UK-based Carbon Trust to fund a new clean tech business incubator in Europe.

GE’s Innovation Barometer shows that roughly half of UK businesses see the UK as a challenging environment for innovation. 84% of them also believe that developing partnerships and collaborating with a combination of players – including government, big business, SMEs and individuals – is crucial for their success in innovation.

In light of those facts, Carbon Trust will work with GE to sift out the most promising early stage companies focusing on clean tech infrastructure in areas such as smart grids, lighting systems, heating and ventilation and building controls. Those fortunate start-ups will receive funding and support from GE and Carbon Trust.

Tore Land, Director of ecomagination Europe commented, “Europe has already proved it has tremendous potential when it comes to cleantech innovation but it will need to work hard to stay ahead of its global competitors.” Land says companies such as GE have a vital role to play in helping start-ups to move with scale and speed into rapidly growing markets, adding, “Our broad product offer also means we have the capability to create platforms for new markets. Electric vehicles are one example of this.”

Carbon Trust’s mission is to accelerate the transition to a low carbon economy by providing advisory services, certification, and finance in both the private and public sector. Their work in 2010 and 2011 included support for hydrogen fuel cell development, wind energy, wave energy, biomass, and energy efficiency in commercial buildings.

Please advise what Asia Oceania is. Is it Asia and Australia Regions, or areas of Asia bordering oceans, or another region?

    Hi,

Minimising carbon emissions should come from within. It should start from individuals and end with industries. The products that are manufactured with various ratings like 3 star, 4 star suggests for its electrictiy consumption, life span, wear and tear etc. Are the benefits on emissions really quantified/differentiated at the manufacturing stage itself?

In a sophisticated economy like UK & US, carbon emissions are monitored at the Government level and suitable precautionary measures are taken,if they are to exceed the benchmark set for such office types. These are regularly published and counselled amongst various groups that are set up for these purposes.

Even the airways operating agencies have been asked to pay for their carbon emissions so that they have a check on the quality of aviation fuel that is used for flying purposes. The air quality is regularly monitored and the level of air pollutants are analysed to see as to what pattern they form in polluting the air.

The ‘go green’ initiative like planting trees helps to nullify/balance such carbon emissions. This leads to healthy living space for all flora and flauna. GE Healthcare/hospitals that is headquartered in UK could also take an initiative in providing with the data on the number of people that are affected with various ailments that are majorly caused by environmental disturbances and are not purely genetic or hereditary in nature. This data could be observed over a period of time and any fluctuations could be analysed at the root level. The effectiveness of eco imagination challenge, healthy imagination challenge contest should have its own say under such circumstances. A fish bone diagram on men, materials, machine, mother nature & measurements should be ideal under such circumstances.

Is the reduction in fund allocation by Europe by 40% rings any wrong signals as such? And how should I go about reading $200 million challenge etc? Are they benefits that are arrived at by comparing amongst various products?

I am not saying that this is something new as we have well defined policies like Air pollution act, water pollution act etc. The real problem is the awareness and the impact that has to be created amongst the general public so that they are cautious in the usage and the emission discharge and collectively work towards a national cause.

    Thanks & Regards
