Diving into the ‘From Used to Useful’ water summit

As we described in our story on the “From Used to Useful” water summit, a mix of experts from academia, business and government recently gathered at GE’s learning center in Crotonville, NY to tackle some of the critical issues surrounding water recycling. According to the WateReuse Association, the U.S. reclaims and reuses only about 6 percent of its wastewater — but the level is much higher in other countries. As GE Water & Process Technologies’ Jeff Fulgham says in the video below: “One of the takeaways that I thought was really interesting, and unexpected for me, was how important the education component is. We have to continue to raise awareness of not just the water challenges around the world but that there truly are solutions — and what a great solution that water reuse is.”

One issue at the forefront of the summit was the need for water reuse solutions in the energy sector. It’s estimated that 15 percent of freshwater worldwide is used for industrial purposes, and in the United States the number is even higher, with some 45 percent of freshwater withdrawals used for industrial purposes. In the video clip below, taken during the summit, Steve Bolze, President and CEO of GE Power & Water, discusses the major issues and the power and water linkages.
