GE helps Houston homes “talk” to the Smart Grid

GE is helping transform the electric grid in Houston, Texas — one of the largest in the United States reaching more than 2.4 million consumers — with a deal announced today to provide wireless communications in support of its Smart Grid system.

Talk radio: GE Digital Energy’s MDS Mercury 3650 radios will provide wireless support to homes in Houston as part of CenterPoint Energy’s steps to develop a smart grid.

GE Digital Energy — the “brains” behind GE’s smart grid technology — is working with CenterPoint Energy to implement a smart grid system called Advanced Metering System (AMS). It’s designed to provide Houston-based consumers with the ability to better monitor and manage electric use and cost in near real-time. GE will provide wireless communications to support the electric utility’s AMS, which will transmit electric utility meter data from consumers’ homes and businesses to CenterPoint Energy’s data center. Ultimately this information will give consumers access to new products and services that will allow them to remotely control their appliances via the Internet, know how much electricity their appliances are using and what electricity rates they are paying at any given time.

The AMS is CenterPoint Energy’s first step in developing a smart grid. This month, it began replacing existing meters with smart meters — with more than 145,000 to be installed across the Houston area by the end of 2009.

Hi Chailie- Megan from GE. I’m not sure on your first question so I’ll have to refer to our O&G team on that one. For the wind farm question I would suggest you reach out to the American Wind Energy Association as there are lots of projects taking place in Texas. http://www.awea.org/

The normal wash cycle is lasting 81 minutes and the drying cycle is on energy saver so is not being used. Per manual this cycle should only take 65 minutes. Is this something we can correct ourselves?

I have a 4 year old SxS refrigerator which keeps getting warmer inside. The coils freeze-up and I’m told that I need to replace the motherboard…can this be the only problem because it will cost around $300 to replace and i would like to avoid this exspence on a fairly-new appliance – thanks

Two GE wall timer model, # 15071 was just recently purchased at The Home Depot. Both are currently malfunctioning. The timers, connected to incandescent and CFL loads, will operate intermittently by turning on outside their off program setting or turning off during their on program setting.

I’m an licensed electrician with 42 years of experience wiring devices and can assure you the timer are wired correctly, programmed correctly and connected to appropriate loads.

What is causing it and can you send me two new units? Thank you.
