As we’ve described in recent stories, the alliance established between GE Healthcare and Intel Corporation last year has continued to pick up steam. The goal is to accelerate the innovation and commercialization of next-generation home health technologies — especially those designed for seniors and patients with chronic conditions. As part of that effort, Intel and GE are expanding their sales and marketing of the Intel Health Guide to include the United Kingdom.
Healthy move: GE Healthcare already markets the Intel Health Guide in the U.S. It’s designed to help doctors monitor chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and heart failure.
The Intel Health Guide combines an in-home patient device with an online interface that allows doctors to monitor patients in their homes and manage care remotely. The technology is designed to collect vital signs, issue patient reminders and features communications tools such as video conferencing and alerts.
The U.K. Department of Health estimates that in Great Britain up to 17.5 million adults and up to three-quarters of those over the age of 75 could be living with a chronic disease. By 2030, the department also estimates that the incidence of chronic disease in those over the age of 65 will more than double, creating an enormous and increasing burden for society.
Given the dramatic increase in people with chronic conditions and an aging population, the Intel and GE teams say a critical goal of their collaboration is to help shift non-urgent care from hospitals to homes through the use of new technologies. In doing that, healthcare will not only become more personalized, but it can become more cost-effective.
Said Agnes Berzsenyi, general manager of GE Healthcare’s Home Health business: “The increasing cost and burden of chronic disease is a huge problem, but we believe new health technologies and new approaches to care will make a difference in the future.”
