Americans are building things again. From Makerbot to GE’s Ecomagination Challenge, an open source competition to find the best ideas in cleantech, opportunities abound today for anyone with the motivation and imagination to get their hands dirty and create things that can solve some of our biggest challenges.
It’s a familiar, scaled model of innovation at GE: Ideas are born and nurtured in the labs of GE’s Global Research Center in Niskayuna, New York, and not just in good times. In fact, when the recession hit, GE doubled down on innovation, increasing technology R&D spending from three to six percent of industrial revenue. From the lab, the best ideas and applications make their way to the dozens of factory floors at GE manufacturing facilities across the U.S. There, GE’s highly-skilled American workforce brings deep experience and open collaboration, through initiatives like teaming, to make the manufacturing process more efficient and bring advanced products to market, often for export.
Our infographic below presents a selection of some of GE’s biggest locations in the U.S. – from Thomas Edison’s original factory in Schenectady, New York, where approximately 1,200 employees work today to build the latest generation of steam turbines and generators, to a GE aviation plant in Durham, North Carolina, where over 300 employees will make 377 fuel-efficient, advanced technology jet engines in 2011. Click on the graphic to learn more and see some of the places where GE is bringing American manufacturing back.

I am a retired GE Engineer and I would like to know how many GE personnel are still employed by GE in the US ands how many are employed at site outside of the US. Also how much of our annual income stream is generated in the US. I noticed on the map that Wilmington North Carolina was not iidentified as a GE manufacturing facility on the map
GE has more manufacturing facilities in the US than listed in above map
In addition to Wilminton NC being missing, where is Grove City PA? Are Nela Park and Evendale no long in existence and I missed it? Aren’t there still some manufacturing facilities in Pittsfield? Where is Appliance Park?
I know I’m not necessarily fully up to date since retirement, but this map just doesn’t look to be complete.
Thanks for your comments, George and Mort. The graphic is not meant to show every single GE manufacturing facility in the U.S., but a representative sample. Readers should feel free to mention additional sites in the comments!
On the jobs question: at the end of 2010, GE had 287,000 employees globally, with 133,000 of these jobs located in the U.S. Since the beginning of 2009, GE has announced the creation of more than 8,000 new jobs in the U.S., with 90% of them supporting our industrial businesses. About half of these announced jobs have been filled, with the rest to be staffed over the next two years as new facilities, technology and volume come on line.
GE currently has approximately 2,500 U.S. job openings posted on its gecareers.com site and more hourly jobs posted with local employment agencies. Of the approximately 2,500 posted jobs, approximately 80% are in our industrial businesses.
Hope this answers your question and feel free with more.
Dave-We’re still here at Nela Park.
Given the current innovative advertising campaign GE is running nationally in Australia and published growth plans for the industrial businesses here – I would be interested to see a similar map of manufacturing sites in Australia.
This is refreshing to see GE support U.S. Manufacturing facilities. It would be great to see % of GE Manufacturing facilities by region. How does GE Corp define manufacturing operations; if a business contracts supplier’s to make assemblies and the facility test the material, is that consider a manufacturing facility?
I worked for GE for 39 years and began my career in the Lynn (MA) River Works Plant in 1960. It was huge then. Is the site manufacturing for GE now or closed and sold; if so, what year?
GE is a political company not a market company. GE’s leadership has decided that fascist bargains with government is more expedient than market profits.
I’m sure the previous will not be posted, typical of fascists.
Nice map but I’m fairly certain we have close to 4,000 employees working for Transportation in Erie not 2,000.
Jericho, you are evidently a GE employee, past or present, or you would not have access here. Your inability to conjugate properly, however, is an embarrasment. You don’t talk much goodly. Learn the proper use of singular vs. plural before attacking my employer again.
Thanks again for all of your comments and for pointing out many of the locations we just didn’t have space in this graphic to include. To answer some of your questions:
- The GE Aviation facility in Evendale is still around; we grouped it under Cincinnati, Ohio
- Appliance Park is located in Louisville, KY
- Bill, GE Aviation still has a facility in Lynn, MA
- Mike, on the Erie numbers, we listed just manufacturing positions, which is approximately 2,000; you’re correct, however, that there are an additional 2,000 employees (approximately) in support and other positions in Erie
- Moira, interesting idea about doing a similar exercise for Australia – one we’ll explore further
Finally, these comments are open to all, not just GE employees, so let’s try to keep the conversation civil and respectful, and thanks again for your comments!
Our GE shop manufactures parts for steam turbines and blades for steam turbines but our shop is not listed on your map.

Rich, thanks for reading and thanks for the addition – we need a bigger map!
Arkanasas City/Winfield/Strother Field in Kansas emplyees around 1000 folks in by and far the best working conditions in the country. Plus the benefits are secoond to none. I tell my friends I won the lottery when I was hired by GE to over haul jet engines.
Can these GE Reports postings be shared outside GE, or are there restrictions?
Jeff, thanks for your comment. Charles, no restrictions – this is a publicly available site.
Since this is shared widely, I would hope the spelling of Cincinnati on the map could be corrected. No double T. Yes double N.
Bob, thanks for pointing out the spelling error! We’re on it.
It is apparent that GE is trying to present an image as a major manufacture to the public by news releases and web sites. Better than the limited map, a table on the internet that listed all GE manufacturing locations, indicating location, products made, organizational unit of GE and number of employees, would be very interesting and impressive, just from the size of the table. To be really impressive, by length, locations world wide and everything under the GE corporate umbrella could be included.
Hi
I would like to know if you have a list of all your locations where you have an oil and gas site and what each site does. Also where can I find out more about you key people in oil and gas not just at CEO level.
I would be very grateful for this.
Thanks
Is Bucyrus, OH the only lighting factory left since the closing in Winchester, VA?
My mom-in-law is currently looking for a toaster oven that is made in the USA. Are GE’s made here or on foreign soil?
Thomas Edison probably never imagined that his company would grow to become what it is today. The question is what would his emotion be if he saw where so many products are made? And how would he feel about the way people are treated at the overseas factories? We can only imagine.
Thanks for the info…how about up grading facilities to generate out side contractors work….and promoting work with other industry leading companies….we can not wait for DC,
Hey Rich, How many employees are there at the Bedford Park, IL Plant?
I was looking at a GE home water filtration system, and the box said Made in the USA, but I can’t find where they are manufactured. What facility makes the filters and faucets?
I absolutely will never buy another GE product after becoming informed about the way GE does business!
Good ol American Corporation huh? Huge profits due to OUTSOURCING primarily!!! Pay your fair share &
be the “patriotic” company you claim to be! Hire more qualified American citizens! You want a pat on the back for the relatively small amount of employees you still have here?! Not likely. You are the worst of the mega corporations who only care about the almighty buck for the upper tier management & above. Many of us have been out here knowing it all along. Luckily…it seems as tho the tide is turning! You may lose your NO congress this go round!! Too many of us are fed up! We can vote not only at the polls… but with what we choose not to buy!!!! Banks are not too big to fail and neither are corporations. So very sad that those of you in charge have no sense of loyalty to your country! Don
t know how you sleep at night! It is also well known that you tend to not hire people who have been unemployed for too long. Despicable!!!!
I am interested in purchasing a microwave oven and would like to be able to purchase one that is manufactured in the United States. I have looked everywhere on the GE sites and cannont figure out which products are made here. Can you help?
I too wantto know what you are making inside the U.S. Shopping for a compact refrigerator.
You have businesses inside Wisconsin. I don’t see these facilities on the map either. Why use a map to communicate if it doesn’t convey accurate information. This raises concerns to use consumers.
What about a manufacturing plant in Vermont? Does it still exist?
