NASA, GE team up to test fuel-efficient jet engines

GE Aviation and NASA have renewed their partnership to test a new jet engine concept that can reduce fuel consumption by up to 30 percent. The engine leverages an open rotor fan design that was tested more than two decades ago to curb fuel prices and is now making a comeback. The partners will begin wind-tunnel testing on a scale-model, counter-rotating fan system at NASA’s facilities in early 2009.
