Obama spotlights GE’s wind partners on Earth Day

April 22, 2009

President Barack Obama put wind energy at the top of his list during today’s Earth Day celebrations with a stop in an Iowa town that’s home to two GE suppliers: Trinity Structural Towers, which builds the towers that support wind turbines, and TPI Composites, which provides wind-turbine blades. The President’s energy plan hopes to boost investments in renewable energy companies in order to lower energy costs and create jobs.

Green machines: Wind is just one part of GE’s renewable and alternative energy portfolio. For something off the beaten path this Earth Day, click here to learn about some novel uses of our technologies, such as a Wisconsin dairy that’s generating power and heat by using biogas from cow manure as fuel in a GE Jenbacher gas engine — or the ski resort that’s generating one-third of its power from a GE wind turbine.

“As a company, we support President Obama’s vision to double our nation’s renewable energy production in the next three years,” said John Krenicki, vice chairman of GE and president and CEO of GE Energy Infrastructure.

Vic Abate, head of GE Renewables, told The Chicago Tribune that the region has a bright future because of companies like these. “One out of two turbines we use comes from factories like this in the Midwest,” Abate said about Obama’s visit to Trinity’s plant. “It’s now a mainstream source of power.”

Elsewhere at GE on Earth Day, GE Consumer & Industrial is helping to build awareness about how to save energy — and brightening up some Midwestern cities in the process — with its month-long Earth Day initiative. For every unique visitor to www.GEProjectPlantaBulb.com, GE will plant a corresponding number of flower bulbs, up to 100,000 in total.

On Earth Day, NASA pays tribute to our mother planet with a video of the Earth taken from the Space Station.
You can watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lj2qqoZzZ3M.
I’m just wondering how the Earth will look like from the same space spots in the next 10, 20, 50 or 100 years?
