Patient advocacy: Improving the cancer conversation

October 26, 2009

Today’s panel discussion at GE’s healthymagination technology showcase, which is running for two weeks in Midtown Manhattan, asked the question: What’s missing from the dialogue about cancer when it comes to patients, doctors and treatments? One of the topics on the agenda was the impact that current healthcare reform proposals will have on cancer research and patients — a subject tackled by panelists from both the Republican and Democratic sides of the political aisle. From the patient perspective, Carma Bylund, a behavioral scientist in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Assistant Professor at Weill Cornell Medical College, presented research findings about how doctors in cancer care can better communicate with their patients. She describes her work in the video below:

Also on the panel was GE’s Mark Little, senior vice president and director of GE Global Research, who describes his presentation about the future of cancer diagnostics in the video below. (The “PET” scan he references is a Positron Emission Tomography scan, which is a type of radioactive imaging.)
