GE Healthcare’s digital radiography x-ray units have just reached a key milestone — being certified as ecomagination products within the company. Unlike traditional x-ray machines seen in a doctor’s office, these eliminate the need for thousands of gallons of developing fluid, thousands more gallons of water, and the need to store thousands of x-ray film sheets.
Catching some rays: Craig Loomis, Global Product Marketing Manager, explains the benefits of the technology used in GE products like the Definium 5000 unit, pictured here in this video.
Because doctors view digital images, there’s a ripple effect of efficiency, both in terms of operation and energy. For example, eliminating 50,000 analog films saves 1,900 gallons of fixer and developer chemicals per year. Even better, a GE Healthcare digital x-ray room is designed to replace two GE analog x-ray rooms.
To join GE’s ecomagination portfolio, a system must complete the company’s rigorous internal environmental and operational evaluation. A GE Healthcare digital radiography x-ray system has the potential to reduce energy consumption by 4,300 kWh or 78%, and save approximately $100,000 per year in productivity and material costs based on US national averages.
