GE’s labs unveil Santa’s high-tech sleigh of the future

The scientists at GE Global Research have made it a tradition each year to showcase the latest and greatest technology developments during the holiday season. Last year, the team flipped the switch on the first-ever OLED Christmas tree using GE’s bendable, paper-thin lights. This year they figured out a way to top it — and stay on Santa’s good list — by dreaming up a futuristic new sleigh featuring 10 real Global Research technologies that reached key milestones in 2009. “After all, we do have cool technology that could make Santa’s life a lot easier,” writes physical chemist Anil Duggal on GE’s research blog. Just click on the 3-D sleigh to get details on the new features — from lightweight carbon fiber composites for the frame, to icephobic coatings, to a wireless medical sensor for Santa to make sure he’s still his jolly old self at 30,000 feet!

Good to see the engineers at GE are staying busy. Can this sleigh also reduce unemployment, restore civil liberties, and educate dumb Americans?

  2. Arnold Flack says:

The car is AWESOME I wish I had a car like that . I wonder if Santa can fit in it? The reindeer might go on strike on Christmas and tepe his house and I wouldn’t blame them. But I would highly recomend it. I love it. Can you get me one?

  3. Jarrod Baniqued says:

    To General Electric:
If you think Santa’s sleigh needs all that fancy stuff and also if you think that’s a concept, you need to think about either him throwing his old sleigh away, or even transferring all that technology (except for the hood) to his old sleigh. But the technology is neat anyway.

  4. Ajit says:

    Dear Santa,
Thank u so much for all nice gift in my life.

  5. Ajit says:

    always smile .

  6. Joe R says:

The OLED Christmas Tree last year was cool, but I have to admit this is a little disappointing, primary because you didn’t actually create anything. You just got some poor intern to make a flash object with 10 interesting facts. Come On.. don’t hold out on us I want to see you guys as GE actually build the sleigh!!

  7. Jay says:

    The reindeers man!!!!

  8. Maria says:

Hey Santa… Kool ride, love the concept. Thanks to GE you put some nice gifts under my tree this year, But only one request… Could you bring about 900 more orders for locos to the Erie plant, we would appreciate it. Love & kisses A GETS wife. P.S. We have some friends outta work this would help, tks again!!!

  9. Nyles says:

I like your new sled Santa. Can I have a Ride when you bring my presents?

  10. Debbie Johnson says:

So no more Reindeers?????? We love Rudolph!

  11. adolfo says:

ja my comment is very hot

  12. Chris in Buffalo says:

I noticed those Christmas (Holiday) lights weren’t LED? Or Are they? And is there a Solar Panel hooked to them so that I can keep my electric bills to a minimum? So many questions I know – but so little time!

  13. George Long says:

Great design, but inadequate space for toys & gifts!!

  14. hanna says:

    i hate it
it so stupid because he can’t use his reindeer

  15. Bill says:

The sleigh is interesting. The design is very retro in styling. If you look closely, the front of Santa’s sleigh is a face. The eyes are the headlights, teh nose is the GE logo and the mouth is the grill. I love it

  16. B,Sukhbat says:

    Good innovation.

  17. ann says:

i like his old sliegh and his 8 tiny rienghdeer

  18. JUDYCARR says:

I THINK THHE CARE IS A PIECE OF EXCELLENTS.

  19. Dale says:

Incredible. Makes me wish I had stuck to my dream of becoming an engineer.

  20. Madeline says:

    Dear Santa,
Please give my friend Macie a really, really good gift because she had surgery. Just please make her feel better. I just don’t know if you have something special for her to vfeel better. She’s my best friend ever and she’s a special friend to me.

  21. Randyrocker says:

You’ve just put the Reindeer out of business, and poor Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer will not go down in History after all.
Not only that, where’s there a compartment for Santa to place all of his bags of toys for the children, and it doesn’t look like it would be too comfortable for Santa to sit in on such a long ride. I even wonder if Santa would be able to fit into the vehicle.
Not to say, that when this motorized sleigh pulls up on a roof, the noise would wake everyone in the house up, if not crush them with the weight of the sleigh-mobile. GE has failed this year on delivery and maybe should go back to the Christmas drawing board. Ho! Ho! No!

  22. ADAM says:

Were can I get one, it looks like the vehicle of the future!

  23. ADAM says:

I LOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVE THIS! It would be cool for christmas!

  24. Chaffee in Idaho says:

What a rip off. Ford Motor Company introduced all the same stuff in the ’67 Mustang, no one was impressed then, not even Santa. He was paid off to use his sleigh as a platform for what GE is calling new technology. Can’t blame him, he needs the cash due to pressure from the Elf union, increased health care cost, rising prices of raw materials. The Big Guy in red is dealing with it the best he can. I toast my cup of spiked eggnog to you, Merry Christmas.

  25. Santa Claus says:

Ho Ho Ho! Thank you very much GE I love my new ride I can’t wait to test it. This is going to be my best Christmas, because someone has gave me a gift. I hope you are sending it to me in expedited shipping.

    HO HO HO
    MERRY CHRISTMAS

  26. Jasim Alzubaidi says:

Sending you my wishes for…..peace in your heart during this fantastical time of year…for blessings in the year to come to you and your loved ones. Best wishes in 2010

    Merry Christmas!

  27. james says:

santa was a lot better off with his old
sliegh and his 8 tiny rienghdeer he never needed the use for fueland he didint need to use a engine
    that harmed the ozone

  28. David says:

Ah, once again GE reduces the workforce. What kind of severance package did the reindeers get once they were no longer needed to pull Santa’s sleigh?

  29. you know says:

luke skywalke just because you dont believe in santa dont mean that you have to be rude aboit him. so i think that you need to just get a life.

  30. you know says:

luke skywalke just because you dont believe in santa dont mean that you have to be rude aboit him. so i think that you need to just get a life. oh and bye the eay i reallywanta a ipod touch.

  31. ZEEMADMAN says:

Obviously the world has changed, and Santa will have to pass through some dangerous areas of the world. What G E designed weapons systems can be mounted on Santa’s Sleigh for his defense. G E Mini guns perhaps. With a Heads Up Display with a Target Tracking System. With a G E designed Nuclear Self Destruct Device, for a worse case scenario, of course!

  32. kevin says:

    nice new ride!!!!

  33. kevin says:

NO, NO WAY. THERE’s no way Santa’s going anywhere without his sleigh!!!

  34. Row says:

have you forgotten about the simplicity and magic of the original sleigh?!

  35. Alexander says:

  39. carrie says:

what happened to the traditional riendeer… and the kids belief

  40. Papa Ree says:

Question: So are the Reindeer out of work now? Where did they go. GE is gonna have to give them a job, otherwise this will add to the unemployment rate. I’ve got it. Maybe they can retrain and retool to work in the factory making this new Santa Hot Rod.

Just kidding. Great Job, I love it.

  41. rosiey posie says:

    Nice concept.

  45. Larry says:

I’d like to know what a “nano scientist” is. Sounds like a very, very, very small scientist to me.

  46. Laura says:

I think GE could have found a better way to spend its money.
Reindeer eat corn, this car should too.
    Think greener.
