Electronic Medical Records, known as EMRs for short, usually work behind the scenes in hospitals and clinics. But as their use rapidly expands, they’re now literally ready for primetime. The computerized systems, which create comprehensive digital patient records, got the glittering Hollywood-treatment on last night’s episode of NBC’s The Biggest Loser, which is leaving the inefficiency of paper records behind when documenting medical results for the contestants.

‘Losers’ win! Throughout Season 9 of The Biggest Loser, the show’s doctor, Robert Huizenga, M.D, will access the health records of contestants using GE’s Centricity EMR.

While the broadcast exposure in front of millions of viewers is certainly fun, GE’s Centricity EMR team says that using the system on the popular show can play an important role in helping to elevate awareness among patients and doctors about the power healthcare IT has in improving care.

The technology, which is already used by thousands of clinicians every day, will show how going digital can help reduce costs, increase access and improve care — all of which are goals of GE’s healthymagination initiative. For example, EMRs do more than simply replace a doctor’s paper chart. These systems check for drug interactions, flag health protocols when it comes to procedures and health maintenance, and they track a patient’s condition over time. And for clinics such as the ones featured in our recent story about Collier Health Services in Florida, EMRs are helping to connect doctors in 10 different clinics. The technology allows patients in the system to access care from multiple locations — and it provides other practical benefits, such as letting the doctor electronically transmit prescriptions to pharmacies, which dramatically cuts wait times.

<img style="margin-bottom: 9px;" src="http://files.gereports.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/biggest_loser_lg.jpg" alt="The Biggest Loser challenges and encourages overweight contestants to shed pounds in a safe manner through comprehensive diet and exercise.
One of the most innovative projects underway at GE Capital is the $250 million fund it launched two years ago with NBC Universal. As we described in our video yesterday, the Peacock Equity fund invests in digital media companies in the venture capital space -- such as in video game developer Trion World Network, which has teamed with NBCU’s Syfy for a breakthrough TV and game collaboration. Today, we take a closer look at the fund, which invests in four primary sectors: advertising, content, gaming, and technology. Lauren Zalaznick, head of NBCU’s Women and Lifestyle Entertainment Networks, explains in the video below that when it comes to investment choices, the fund assesses the growth potential of each company and then comes to NBCU to “see if there’s a direct fit — a direct value — into one of our businesses, and in that way, have a mutual co-creation of value.” Adds Michael Chen, President and CEO of Media, Communications & Entertainment for GE Capital: “The question has always been: Are you trading analog dollars for digital dimes? We’re trying to figure out how do you break the mold? How do you invest in digital media and make money in that space?”

NBC Universal’s Syfy network and California-based game development company Trion World Network are about to revolutionize the way you watch TV shows and play video games. Spurred on by an investment from NBCU’s and GE Capital’s Peacock Equity fund -- which invests in digital media companies in the venture capital space -- the two are developing an online video game in tandem. As Lars Butler, CEO of Trion, says in the video below about the project, which has the working title One Earth: “In this unique set-up, we can do things that other people would never even dare before: create a video game world and a television show… They not only promote each other, they literally depend on each other and co-evolve.” Rob Hill, the senior producer for Trion, adds: “This project, in collaboration with Syfy, in and of itself, is completely different from anything I’ve worked on …Usually you have a game that’s based off of a book or television show or movie, or a movie that’s based off a game…. Some of the implications of what we are trying to accomplish here are to really be able to broaden the audience,” by bringing viewers from the show into the game and vice versa.

Fusing NBC Universal with Comcast’s cable and sports networks and certain digital properties, the new firm will be 51 percent owned by Comcast, 49 percent owned by GE and managed by Comcast. As GE Chairman and CEO Jeff Immelt says in the video below, the new venture is good for viewers and investors.

<GEREPORTS_WEBONLY IMAGE="http://files.gereports.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/jri-video-ger.jpg">

</GEREPORTS_WEBONLY>
Jeff Zucker, current president and CEO of NBCU, will lead the new venture, which values NBCU’s businesses at $30 billion. The deal combines NBCU’s broadcast and cable networks, movie studio, theme parks and other investments with Comcast’s assets valued at $7.25 billion. And when they finally get rolling as a combined company, both teams will already have much in common – from the comedy DNA running through shows such as NBC’s “30 Rock” and E!’s “The Soup,” to the online video wizardry driving hulu.com and Comcast’s Fancast site, to a passion for high-octane sports with NBC’s Olympics and Comcast’s Tour de France coverage.

When it closes, the deal frees up $8 billion for GE to redeploy in its industrial businesses. At the same time, by maintaining a 49 percent stake, GE shareholders will benefit over the next several years from the strength of the new company’s well-established networks and its strong cash flow capabilities. As Jeff Immelt summed it up: “It simplifies our portfolio for investors while allowing us to have a major interest in a more valuable media business.”

* Read full details about the transaction in today’s news release.
* Learn more about the deal and the regulatory reviews on a new website.

Importantly, the deal combines NBCU’s programs and its TV and film libraries with Comcast’s experience in distribution across multiple devices via cable and the Internet. It means the new NBCU will be in a position to accelerate the development of both in-home and mobile viewing options. That ability to give viewers more choices on how they view top shows is seen as a must-have capability in a media landscape that is changing at a rapid pace.

Comcast already has a head start in that arena, as well as a long-term vision to deliver exponentially more video content on TV, online and across platforms. The company is a leader in what the cable industry calls the “TV Everywhere” movement, which aims to bring thousands of movies and shows to cable customers online for no additional cost. It was Comcast that created the free video on demand business model, which led to the explosive growth of on-demand TV viewing.

* Watch CNBC’s interview with Jeff Immelt and Brian Roberts.

Tuned in: For advertisers, the new company creates new cross-promotional capabilities and a broader, national “one-stop-shopping” opportunity to better reach consumers.

The President of NBCU’s Women & Lifestyle Entertainment Networks, which includes Bravo and Oxygen, is on the “Time 100″ list of the world’s most influential people. At No. 29 under Time’s heading of “Builders & Titans” — Lauren is one notch ahead of the powerful U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner. Not too shabby.

The name game: NBCU’s Lauren Zalaznick is in good company on Time magazine’s list with heavy hitters from Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton to Brad Pitt and the guys who created Twitter.

Martha Stewart writes the profile of Lauren in the magazine, saying: “When you’re building a brand, you have to know exactly what that brand stands for… Her programs are filled with creative, talented and real people. Her shows, and those on them, don’t make any apologies for being themselves. Lauren, 46, has transformed that network so that you can now recognize a Bravo show at a distance. To do that kind of work in a very crowded field takes more than a producer — it takes a visionary.”

And, as long as we’re looking at lists, a tip of the hat was given to GE with its ranking on Forbes magazine’s annual list of “America’s Most Reputable Companies.” GE came in at No. 17. That’s behind PepsiCo, Google and Johnson & Johnson but ahead of Apple, Coca-Cola and IBM.

GE’s NBC Universal continues to turn heads for its ability to successfully grow its cable franchises. The Associated Press playfully writes: “These may not be the best of times for the United States, but they’re great for USA.” The story notes that USA Network averaged more than 3.2 million prime-time viewers during the first three months of 2009, “more than any other cable network in history and even more than the fifth broadcast network, the CW, according to Nielsen Media Research. The more important number is $1 billion. Those are the profits USA and its cable sister, SciFi, contributed to NBC Universal’s bottom line last year.”

We’re watching you: USA’s shows such as “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” starring Jeff Goldblum and Julianne Nicholson, are keeping the network humming.

One big item in its favor is “like broadcasters, USA earns money by selling advertisements. Unlike broadcasters, USA gets lucrative subscription fees paid by cable systems that carry it.” Says Bonnie Hammer, president of the unit that oversees USA Network and SciFi Channel, “There are two streams of revenue. That alone is a huge advantage.”

* Read “These are great times for the USA (cable network)”

Meanwhile, in its cover story, Broadcasting & Cable describes how Oxygen’s growth is continuing, with ad revenue increasing in the first quarter of this year and ratings among its target demographic of 18-34-year-old women jumping by “more than any other network in ad-supported cable’s top 30.” The magazine asked if NBCU thought it could repeat the great success it had growing Bravo. Said Jeff Gaspin, president and COO of Universal Television Group: “I see no reason why Oxygen shouldn’t follow the trajectory of Bravo. I actually think Oxygen has a better sense of who they are than Bravo did in its first couple of years under our ownership.”

* Read “Breathing New Life Into Oxygen”

And TV Week gives NBC Universal high marks for the other kind of green, writing in a story this week that it has been able to “generate tens of millions of dollars worth of sponsorship revenue” in its various green-themed campaigns. “The scale of NBC Universal’s green promotions sets it apart from other media companies, such as CBS Corp. and Discovery Communications, which also have linked their programming and marketing to environmentally friendly themes. It’s a seam that hasn’t been tapped out yet,” TV Week writes. “Research by NBC and by some of its sponsors shows environmental consciousness is a value that is surviving the recession. Consumers say they would spend more for something from a green company, even in this economic environment.”

The ability of GE’s NBC Universal to buttress the bottom line — despite the economic downturn — continues to draw attention. In its story about why “television matters to GE,” The New York Times cites a dramatic reversal among some critics, who last year argued the unit should be spun off but now see it as “a key contributor of cash.” As the story notes, NBCU’s profits are outperforming its peers “and in the broader media universe, NBC Universal appears to be in a stronger position to weather the recession than many of its competitors, owing to its growing cable networks, the most durable corner of big media.”

It’s Hammer time: NBC Universal is in the spotlight this week, with more eyes on its strong cable properties including USA Network, which is helmed by Bonnie Hammer, far right, and features stars such as Tony Shalhoub in “Monk” and Debra Messing in “The Starter Wife.”

NBCU is also in the spotlight this week with USA Today’s profile of Bonnie Hammer, president of the unit that oversees cable’s biggest channel, USA Network, and SciFi Channel. “I can tell you that our (operating profit) margins are well over 50%. I’m very proud of that,” Bonnie told the paper. Revenue at USA is 13% ahead of the first quarter in 2008, which was its “best year ever in ratings, revenues, operating profit and margin — bar none,” according to Bonnie. The story notes USA and SciFi contributed more than $1 billion to NBCU’s 2008 profits.

In other news, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy just announced the signing of two agreements with two government-owned companies in India as the firms prepare to collaborate on building multiple GE Hitachi-designed nuclear reactors. The agreements will help the world’s largest democracy meet its goal of expanding electricity generation tenfold by 2032. GE, which employs more than 14,500 people across India, built the country’s first nuclear plant during the 1960s.

And the magazine Global Water Intelligence talked with GE Water president Heiner Markhoff, who underscored GE’s goal in the industry of being a technology supplier rather than an engineering, procurement and construction contractor. “The sweet spot for GE was and will be technology,” Heiner says. “I think in this environment we have to think much more about partnerships where we work with players who can bring things together. I do not want us being the integrator of bits and pieces…. I think that the core of our offering in this business is technology, and bringing differentiated technologies to market which will help solve major problems.”

Now the NBC Universal network is showing how brand positioning can reach into communities and drive viewership — while at the same time becoming something more.
On March 13, USA debuted its Character Project and companion book, “American Character,” at a party in New York City co-hosted by Vanity Fair magazine. The projects are part of the network’s effort to celebrate the characters of the United States through photography.

In association with the Aperture Foundation, a non-profit photography organization, USA enlisted 11 world-class photographers whose cameras captured hundreds of characters ranging from sustainable farmers in Washington State to travelers along transcontinental Route 50 to those caught in the rituals of getting a trim at barbershops in New York. The gallery of photos will tour seven U.S. cities, including Philadelphia, Chicago and Los Angeles.

Lenora Claire, from L.A., was one of the featured characters in the gallery. Over the years, magenta-haired Claire has performed in the circus, walked on glass and even eaten light bulbs. “What makes me a character?” she said at the New York event, “I could go on forever.”

In each city, the network will work with local affiliates and school districts to host field trips to the exhibits and in-school lesson plans that celebrate the character within us all. High school students within each local market will have the opportunity to submit photos that capture “characters” in their own city. Local winners will then meet a featured photographer and have their photos displayed at the Character Project exhibition in their market. Winners also receive a digital camera and a grant to support arts education in his or her school.

“By partnering with our affiliates to bring this artistic initiative to local communities, high school students will have the opportunity to explore the meaning of the word ‘character’ in a unique way that we hope will have a lasting impact on their education,” said Brian Hunt, Senior Vice President, Marketing & Sales Strategy, TV Networks Distribution, NBC Universal.

Its “Nightly News” broadcast has finished first for 20 consecutive weeks and its other news programs are surging, but as Bill Carter writes in The New York Times, “NBC is also winning one more competition – perhaps the biggest one – just as convincingly: Its news division is making a pile of money, while its competitors are making much less, or none at all.” Adds Carter: “The scales are tipped in NBC’s favor, mainly because of assets neither of its rivals possess: moneymaking, information-based channels.”

John Krenicki, the head of GE’s energy infrastructure unit, said at a Reuters roundtable yesterday that the next U.S. energy bill needs to give the federal government the power to build more transmission lines if the country is going to realize the benefits of wind and solar energy. “How are we going to get renewable power from the mountain states to the West coast, or to the center of the country?” John said. “We have to do in the electricity sector what was done in the gas pipeline sector to really realize the potential.” Read Reuter’s story on the transmission challenge.

Halfway there: Building wind turbines like this one in Tehachapi, California, is part of the solution – making sure the entire country can benefit from renewable energy is the other.

Elsewhere in the energy sector, GE yesterday opened its new sales, services and technology center in Moscow. “Our new facility demonstrates GE’s long-term commitment to invest in sustainable energy infrastructure development in the region,” said Rod Christie, President of GE Energy for Central & Eastern Europe, Russia and CIS. Read GE’s announcement.

In other news, GE’s NBC Universal earned high praise for making a tough call when it came to using its reporting resources. In his recent “On the Ground” column in The New York Times, Nicholas Kristof asks for a “a round of applause” for NBC News for sending Ann Curry and a team of journalists to report on the genocide in Darfur.

“Granted, I know many TV journalists would love to go to cover Darfur/Congo/Pakistan as well,” he writes. “It’s not the journalists who are the obstacle, but the executives. They’re trying to maximize revenues, and it’s not obvious that the path to making money is sending crews half-way around the world to dangerous places that viewers don’t hugely care about. So NBC’s coverage is not just a tribute to Ann Curry’s doggedness in pursuit of meaningful news but also a tribute to the NBC executives that they approved the trip and put the stories on the air. I just hope that CBS, ABC – and, yes, Bill O’Reilly – are gnashing their teeth and can be shamed into doing more of the reporting that is expensive, thankless and the soul of journalism.”

Last but not least, GE’s augmented reality Smart Grid web site – which allows a viewer to activate 3D animation via a computer’s webcam – received a few shout-outs from a number of design, tech and general-interest blogs.
