In our story on Earth Day, wind turbines were front and center. Not only did President Obama visit a manufacturer of wind towers, but we also highlighted the Jiminy Peak ski resort in western Massachusetts, which is the first mountain resort in North America to generate its own power from the wind. A GE Energy 1.5-megawatt turbine provides approximately one-third of its power.
Our friends at the geadventure.com blog have been diving into how GE technology actually works — both in the lab and in the field — and they’ve lately focused on Jiminy Peak. While giant wind farms have a different approach to deploying large numbers of wind turbines on flat land, the video below that they published on their site is a fascinating look at how one of these gigantic machines — which is taller than the Statue of Liberty — winds its way from the highway to a mountaintop.
