Visualizing world health with the data artists at GOOD

October 26, 2009

During GE’s two-week healthymagination showcase currently underway in New York, the issue of spiraling healthcare costs — and how to get the best bang for the buck — has been a common thread throughout the numerous panel discussions and presentations. In keeping with that theme, our friends at GOOD — which is the magazine and website for people who want “to do good” — developed this “World Health” info-graphic that looks at the amount of money 12 countries spend on healthcare and some of what they get for it. As the data visualizers at Good describe it: “Every country in the world approaches healthcare differently, but the end goal is the same: keep citizens as healthy as possible for the smallest amount of money.” Click the image to enlarge it.During GE’s two-week healthymagination showcase currently underway in New York, the issue of spiraling healthcare costs — and how to get the best bang for the buck — has been a common thread throughout the numerous panel discussions and presentations. This “World Health” visualization is the latest installment in a GE series that began with the “Health Visualizer” application, developed by Seed Media’s Ben Fry. That interactive chart, seen below, draws on information from six million patient records in GE’s proprietary electronic medical records database to show how some of the most common conditions are related to one another. What are some of the major health issues facing Americans today? Try clicking on the visualizer to see.
