Working hard to keep oil where it belongs

Startling fact time. Experts estimate that 12 million tons of oil leaks annually from pipelines around the globe. (To give you some perspective, the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill was about 10.8 million gallons.)

Enter the UltraScan™ Duo, an ecomagination-certified product that travels through pipelines identifying cracks and areas of metal loss in a single pass. The UltraScan™ Duo uses Phased Array Technology, first put to use by GE Healthcare for higher-resolution brain, spinal and soft-tissue diagnostics, to help enable greater data resolution and accuracy in its scans.

Nicknamed, “The Pig,” the product’s purpose is loosely based on the ancient Roman practice where pigskins were used to clean and monitor city water lines. Currently, the UltraScan™ Duo is being used throughout North America. You can check out the video below for a closer look.
